Humble Help

“Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every way” goes the song (obviously and deliberately falsely) — because everyone knows they’re not perfect … but still we find it hard to be humble. Some of the Corinthian Christians also suffered from pride … and one way that’s appropriate and helpful at times to burst the pride bubble is sarcasm. So in 1 Cor. 4:8 Paul says, “Already you have all that you want! Already you have become rich! Without us you have become kings!” Paul is being sarcastic, and in fact grammatically it’s a statement which is impossible to be true! So … if I’m being egotistical, sometimes just cut me down to size with sarcasm … and be open to someone else doing the same to you. I and you can try and make ourselves feel good and think good about ourselves by talking ourselves up (to ourselves & others) BUT: God hates that. In James 4:6 he quotes Proverbs 3:34: “God opposes the proud”. Wow! That’s serious, and should seriously lead you and I to feel guilty about when we’ve been proud/conceited/arrogant, confess it to God in shame and repent in His strength. When I am being proud I am doing something God hates. BUT: God loves humility. In Isaiah 66:2 God says, “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.” When you and I are humble, it’s as though it brings joy to our God’s heart. So … may that help us to love being humble. AND: God helps the humble. The end of James 4:6 says “… but [God] gives grace to the humble.” & in v8 James tells us “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” So … do you want to have God’s daily enabling and sustaining, and be (in a ‘practical’ sense) close to God? Then friends, let’s pursue being humble!
