I’ve been called a “Murderer”!

Our church administration building (offices, the meeting room and kitchen) have been overrun by cockroaches. Just this week we had the building sprayed. The result was dozens of dead cockroaches. However, it reminded me of a missionary in Africa who was fixing a friend’s piano. When he opened the lid, cockroaches came running out everywhere. The man who owned the piano began to kill them with a rolled up paper. The missionary cried “Stop! Why are you doing that? They are only doing what is in their nature.” He was saying that is how they were made, and questioning what right we have to kill them.

Does killing cockroaches make me a murderer? After all, they didn’t choose to be born this way.

Friends, when we read the Bible we see that just because something is born a certain way doesn’t make it good, natural or acceptable. In fact, we find the Bible calling us to put to death our earthly nature! Colossians 3:5 Put to death therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these the wrath of God is coming.

Galatians 5 says that there is a war going on in the heart and life of every believer. A war between the Spirit nature and the sinful nature. Here again we are commanded to kill one of the natures.

Am I a murderer for killing cockroaches? I’ll leave that for you to decide. However, when it comes to killing our sinful nature, whether we were born like this or not (really, all of us were) it is clear, we must put it to death. Because killing a cockroach won’t keep you out of heaven, but we are warned that our sinful nature will.

Galatians 5:19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

So, without sounding like a lunatic, let’s get murdering.
