Making the most of every opportunity

Do you always make the most of every opportunity? If you’re like me, your response might be: I wish! Sometimes opportunities come immediately upon us out-of-the-blue, and at other times we get prompted by our Lord, over a period of time, to do something. And what am I talking about? I am talking about saying things to people (but it can also be, doing things to help people) to get them to consider Jesus. Yes, do you, do I, make the most of every opportunity that comes our way to help people think more about Jesus? For our encouragement, but also as an example, I would like to share with you something that one of our brothers in Christ, here at TGS (The Good Shepherd), is doing. He is making the most of an opportunity that arose, using the gifts and abilities (and passions) he has, to try and persuade people to consider the truth of the Bible and therefore what God has done through his Son. And what is it exactly that he is doing? He puts together a weekly program for our local community radio station, Cairns FM 89.1. It runs on Tuesdays at 2pm and is repeated that night at 11pm, and goes for an hour. It is called, Christ, You Know It Aint Easy (CYKIAE), picking up on The Beatles’ song, The Ballad of John and Yoko. Now, although some at the time (1969) didn’t like this expression (CYKIAE) – maybe you don’t – our brother, here at TGS, isn’t using it in a sacrilegious way, he is using it as a platform to hopefully get people to journey ultimately to Christ. Here is Paul Fordyce’s introduction to his program: 13.8 billion years ago there was nothing. No empty space waiting to be filled by the universe, no time and no matter. Then the big bang. From a sub-atomic particle, Stephen Hawking said was a billion trillionith trillionith of a centimetre, was created our perfect universe. After just three minutes all of the matter that would soon make up 10 trillion galaxies existed and all from that miniscule particle – and atheists say, “Yea but where’s the scientific proof that God exists”. I’m Paul and this is CYKIAE – “Christ You Know It Ain’t Easy”. CYKIAE’s all about how Christianity, uniquely out of all religions, gave us the technology, science, democracy, capitalism, human rights, our legal system and more – in short it made our modern world and all of the rules and beliefs needed for it to run for the benefit of all mankind under God. And removing Christianity is going to take all of that away from you. Don’t believe me? Listen in and I’ll tell you how everything happened and how it all works. Atheism is Dead. What might our Lord be wanting you to do? Perhaps, it is to pray for Paul as he prepares his weekly program, and to pray for his growing audience. Perhaps it is to listen to it and encourage others to listen to it. May we be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading and prodding, and therefore make the most of any opportunity that our Lord brings our way. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. (Colossians 4:5)
