Nothing is made to last

I was talking with some friends recently about how things aren’t made like they used to be. Years ago, you brought things based on how long they would last. I told my friends that Lesley and I were given a washing machine when we first got married. It was a hand me down and it was 26 years old and going strong. After years of marriage the washing machine finally died. In the last 6 years we have had 2 washing machines, so it seems these days washing machines aren’t built to last.

But as I look around our globe today, it is clear that our planet is not meant to last either. With the 5.6 earthquake in Japan recently and the 7.9 earthquake in New Zealand, it is clear to see that even our planet is breaking. New Zealand’s country has literally changed shape. And this is just one form of natural disaster that is breaking our world.

Friends, take heart that this is what God has always said, 1 Peter 1:24 For,

“All people are like grass,     and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25  but the word of the Lord endures forever.”

And Romans 8:20-22:

For the creation was subjected to frustration … the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay … 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

All of creation is breaking, decaying and dying. Nothing will last. Well, one thing will, the one thing that will last is God’s word. God’s truth and promises will endure forever. So while our world is falling apart around us we know that God has promised to create a new heaven and new earth that will not break. Oh friends, may we hold on to God’s word. May we live out God’s word and may we enjoy the blessings of God’s personal and powerful word in our life. The greatest promise of eternal life for all those who trust in his son Jesus.
