Things come in three….
I don’t know about you but I find that very often in life, things come in threes. Have you found that? Only last week something came in threes for Sue and me. And it’s called a water leak. Yes, hard to believe, but all of a sudden we had a water leak in our pool (it’s dropping fast), a water leak in our sewer (no wonder we have a nice green patch in our lawn) and a water leak in our water mains (all we know at this point is that the meter is slowly spinning with nothing turned on and there’s a hissing sound in our concrete slab). Well priorities first – I spent last Sunday, between morning and evening church services, digging up our backyard to fix the sewer. One done, two to go!
Yes it is almost uncanny how things seem to come in threes at times. In the Scriptures there are also many examples of threes. For example, our God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And he is described as holy, holy, holy. Also, Jesus rose on the third day, and the list goes on. But there is another three as such, and it sums up why we exist. It is actually a phrase, and the phrase is repeated three times in the opening chapter of the book of Ephesians. The phrase, more or less says: to the praise of his glory. Yes, that is why we, as God’s people, exist. We exist to the praise of his glory.
I don’t know about you, but I tend to think about the benefits for myself in knowing Jesus: my past is now dealt with; my present can now be managed and my future is secure. And although this is true, there’s something much bigger going on than this. And, I think, to make sure we get it, and don’t forget it, it is repeated three times: to the praise of his glorious grace (v6); to the praise of his glory (v12); to the praise of his glory (v14)! Yes, we exist as his chosen and treasured people, to the praise of his glory.
Things do come in threes at times and sometimes for a very good reason: life is ultimately about the praise of his glory. And that’s why you and I exist. How might you show that you exist for the praise of his glory this coming week?
