War on Christianity

I read a recent article in the Herald Sun by Andrew Bolt entitled, “CHRISTIANS, prepare for persecution…” the article went on to talk about all the opposition or abuse or attacks Christians have experienced in recent times.

Here are some examples: The QLD Education Department wanting to ban students from talking about God, Jesus, the Bible or church in school playgrounds. One example the Department report gave was, students must not say things like “God, please help us to use our knowledge to help others.” Furthermore, students are not allowed to hand out Christmas cards or decorations. Further south two Christian preachers were summoned to Tasmania’s Anti-Discrimination Tribunal just last month for preaching the Biblical view of marriage and homosexuality in church. Last year Sydney’s Student Union threatened to deregister the university’s Evangelical Union unless it stopped insisting members declare their faith in Jesus. Coopers Brewery got hammered for posting a video with two MPs discussing Same-Sex marriage in a respectful way. Churches have been picketed and abused because they have a connection with the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL). Hotels have been bombarded with threats and staff working there have been threatened for hiring out rooms to the ACL. SBS banned Christian ads defending traditional marriage, yet ran ads for Ashley Madison dating service for adulterers. The Greens are demanding that churches lose their legal freedom to hire only Christians. And the list goes on. Wow, are you shocked by some of this? I am.

Andrew Bolt is not a Christian, but he can see what is going on. And he says “I am amazed that your bishops and ministers are not warning you of what is already breaking over your heads.” Mr Bolt is right, Christians are under attack and we should be warning people and equipping them to face it. But in saying that, this is nothing new. Jesus told us this would happen 2000 years ago. Matthew 5:11-12; 10:17-28; John 15:20 If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.” The whole Bible is filled with passages that tell us we will be persecuted just for being a Christian. “Anyone who wants to live a Godly life in Jesus Christ will be persecuted” 2 Timothy 3:12. The first Christians were persecuted for 300 years after Jesus, simply for believing he is the king. And Jesus said in the face of persecution, keep going, keep making disciples.

Friends, we have experienced a time of peace and freedom in our faith, but that time is over. Opposition will increase. You will face it and the answer is not to remain silent. The answer is to keep living for Jesus. Be open, be bold, be faithful and speak and act in ways that show God’s love while still holding onto the truth. Our mission has never changed. We are to make disciples of Jesus to the glory of God. Let’s not hide our faith or run away from persecution, but let’s be the salt and light of the world shining our faith in the dark.
