A drop in the bucket
In my daily quiet time with our Lord I have been reading through Isaiah and Revelation, and the mention of nations keep popping up. And they are popping up at a time when many of us are perhaps thinking about other nations and their roles in the world’s politics. And I must admit that some of what you read in the media today can be a little scary.
I don’t know what other nations are actually up to, but sometimes when I hear what the USA or China or North Korea are supposedly saying or doing it is scary. And no doubt as we journey through this pandemic some nations might be jostling for a better position in their dominance of the world. Yes, it is all a little scary to a mug like me.
And so, when I was reading Isaiah 40 and how the nations, when compared to God, are just like a drop in the bucket or regarded as dust on a set of scales. Or, when push comes to shove, are nothing, worthless and even less than nothing, I feel much more relaxed, knowing that God is so much bigger than everything that is going on.
15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust…. 17 Before him all the nations are as nothing; they are regarded by him as worthless and less than nothing.
And then, later in that chapter, the Holy One (the Lord, God) says: To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal? Obviously the answer is that one cannot compare anyone or anything to him, or no one is equal to him as he is so, so, so much greater in power, let alone in wisdom and other attributes.
I don’t know about you, but I find this so comforting that no matter what is going on in my own life or no matter what is going on in the world, God is so, so, so much greater. And more than that, in Christ I am now one of his children and he works for our good as we now love him.
May we look to him when things get scary, but may we always look to him, as he and only he is ultimately in charge, and so, so, so much bigger than anyone or anything else. He also perfectly knows what he is doing, even when we don’t quite understand it. Amen!
