Life is such a mix

Last week, we (my wife Sue actually) had the delight of looking after our two granddaughters for the day. And when it came to mum, picking up her two girls at the end of the day, one of them decided to have a bit of a dummy spit – we all know what that is, as we’ve all seen it and we all have done itJ! And try as we might, nothing could stop the dummy spit escalating. And so, it got to the point where, Sue basically said: ‘Where did that good little girl go?’, to try and stop things getting even worse.

I was in my home office at the time, listening to all of this going on in our lounge room. I also heard the hilarious reply that then came. It was a reply from our other granddaughter, who was in the toilet at the time. And she yelled out: “I’m here in the toilet grandma”J. Needless to say we all had a laugh – which sort of broke the ice and stopped the dummy spit.

Yes, life is such a mix at times. One minute we can be so nice and the next minute, not that nice at all. Life is also such a mix that sometimes one of us can behave so nicely but the other person, not so nicely. And, if we’re not careful, we can sometimes think that we’re obviously much nicer than the other person, and especially when it’s one of our siblingsJ.

But I suppose that in the end, it all depends on whose standard you are using to measure your own goodness: yours or someone else’s. And it’s not until we try to measure our goodness with ‘the someone else who really matters: God’, that we find we’re in serious trouble.

Yes, life is such a mix, a mix of funny moments, such as the above, as well as good ones and some very bad ones. But thanks be to God that he is good and good all the time. And thanks be to God that in his goodness, he has given us his good Son who did everything asked of him, and with no dummy spits at all. And so we can now enjoy the good life he has offered, even though, for a little while, we will struggle with the mix we see in others, and should also see in ourselves.

There is no one who does good, not even one

(Psalm 14:3 & Romans 3:12).

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ

(1 Corinthians 15:56).
