I was recently listening to one of Martyn Iles (Managing Director of ACL: Australian Christian Lobby) talks, on ’The truth of it’, and it made me think on the whole concept of ‘life and death’.
It made me think about how God is on about life and not about death. His talk also got me reading Genesis chapter nine, and how God wants people to be fruitful, that is, to get on about life and live as one was made to. But on the other hand, he also directly opposes anyone who takes a life. Yes, he is certainly on about life not death. In Genesis chapter nine we are told:
Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind. As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on earth and increase upon it.
Yes, God wants to see life not death. He goes as far as saying: I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being. (Genesis 9:5c). Obviously this speaks loudly on the very issues of abortion and euthanasia, but that is not the purpose of this Minute from a Minister. I just want to specifically consider how much God wants to see us live.
His talk got me considering those words found in John chapter ten that Jesus, God’s Son, spoke: The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they (i.e. my sheep) may have life and have it to the full. And it got me thinking about those famous words of Jesus:
I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.
Yes, we find in the Holy Scriptures what we will one day lose if we ignore Jesus. If we ignore Jesus, and do not come to him, the one who laid down his life for his sheep, we will not see life – we will lose it. If we listen to what I call the ‘evil trinity’: the world, the flesh and the devil, we will suffer the consequences: death. The choice is ours: life or death. God not only wants us to choose the former, but to promote the full life that his Son has now secured for all people.
