Remember who is in Control

With this coming election and the uncertainty of how some things will go depending on who is elected, many are either not sure who to vote for or feeling uneasy about the outcome. While we are to vote responsibly, it is comforting to know who is ultimately in control. Romans 13:1-2 says:

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

God reminds us here that he is ultimately in control, even in the appointment of our next Prime Minister. So, if a government is elected that opposes freedom of religion and expression of religion, then God has allowed this and will use this to grow his kingdom. However, if a government that is favourable to freedom of religion is elected then we are to use this freedom to serve God and his kingdom as best we can.

Interestingly, Paul who wrote Romans, lived in a time when the government persecuted Christians. And so, despite living under persecution, Paul still says to obey the authorities God has appointed, unless of course they ask you to sin. What we saw these first Christians doing was living for God and sharing the gospel: helping God’s kingdom grow.

We are no different. Even if laws change and make it harder to live as a Christian we are still called to live for God, share the gospel and pray that God’s kingdom will grow. Always remember God is in control and will use opposition, persecution, freedom and whatever else, to bring people to Jesus. We are still called to be his witnesses in all this under any government. Praise be to our sovereign God!
