I am sure you have all heard about the politicians who have lost their seats in parliament due to dual-citizenship. If you are unsure about what has happened or why, here is my over-simplified explanation.
To be a member of the Australian government you must renounce any other citizenship from any other country. You can only hold citizenship for Australia. An issue that may come from holding more than one citizenship is that a politician could stop acting in the best interest of Australia and decide to work in favour of another country they feel allegiance too. They are compromised.
Friends, this has much to say to us who are Christians. We who are a part of God’s family as we live our lives here on earth. For our citizenship is in heaven but so often and so easily can it be comprised by our allegiance to this world.
It is very easy to think that our citizenship is here and now. To get comfortable and work at making this our home. But as we have been challenged by our readings in the “What on Earth Am I Here For?” book, this life is just a temporary assignment. We are not put here by God to just live for ourselves. In fact, Paul argues this point in Philippians 3.
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their mind is set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:14-20)
Friends, may our citizenship not be compromised by this life. But may we strain toward heaven, living the life God calls us to live in Jesus. Being transformed by God is not easy, no-one said is would be. Changing your lifestyle for God and his purposes can be hard but because of Jesus, it is worth it! Let us joyfully live for our citizenship in heaven. Fulfilling the purpose God has created us for. Because we know God loves us. We know God has chosen us. We know God has good works for us to do. He has a purpose for our lives. Praise God!
